Changelog
Every update, fix, and new feature — newest first. We build in the open.
First version: a single-page real-time aurora forecast showing live KP index, cloud cover, and tonight's viewing probability. Nothing more, nothing less.
Rolled out the beta palette site-wide — pure black backgrounds, snow/mist/fog text tokens, aurora green accents, and the full KP colour scale. Cards and panels now use elevated night surfaces instead of blue-slate greys.
Fixed heroes and article titles that sat almost centred on About, Learn, Stories, Tours, Community, and related pages. Titles now share the same left edge as the content below.
Updated About with a full story hero, metrics bar, founder section, data-source cards, timeline, and links into the changelog. Layout and mobile styling refreshed throughout.
Added Knut, an on-site guide that helps visitors get a northern lights forecast for their current location.
Added mega menu navigation and improved mobile menu layout, styling, and overall presentation.
City forecasts now show coordinates, location-specific probability, weather icons, flags, cloud cover, and wind — with live KP for real-time accuracy and broader location coverage.
Added compact prediction boxes that combine KP and forecast in one view, with a live pulsing border and smoother animations.
City shortcodes and location pages can switch between KP index and percentage chance, with location-specific probability calculations.
Added a real-photo gallery section to the homepage with a full-screen lightbox viewer. Showcasing real aurora sightings from the field.
Every page now generates a branded preview image when shared on Facebook, iMessage, Twitter/X, or WhatsApp. Article pages use their own hero photo.
Added sitemap.xml covering all 22 location pages and articles, robots.txt, canonical URLs, Open Graph tags, Twitter cards, and FAQ JSON-LD structured data on the homepage.
Deep-dive space weather dashboard with geomagnetic storm probability by G-level, full solar wind metrics panel, 3-hour KP timeline, NOAA alert scale, and data source reference.
Redesigned the live conditions widget on all location forecast pages — more compact layout with KP progress bar and inline metric rows.
Refreshed mobile nav with a cleaner SVG hamburger icon, smooth open/close animation, and removed the outline on active state.
Fixed the 3-day forecast carousel snapping off-centre on mobile by adding correct scroll-padding-left to match container padding.
Tapping the solar wind, Bz, or density readings on the homepage now opens a centred popup explaining what each metric means for aurora viewing.
Added KP level guide, destination cards for 8 top aurora locations, data source explainer, and FAQ section to the homepage for richer content and improved search visibility.
All inline styles now use CSS font variables consistently. Eliminated hardcoded Inter/system-ui overrides that were suppressing the Poppins typeface on sub-pages.
Added a 7-day outlook page with daily KP predictions and geomagnetic activity trends for longer-trip planning.
Switched to higher-cadence DSCOVR feed for Bz, Bt, Bx, By, solar wind speed, density, and pressure. Data now refreshes every 60 seconds.
Launched /aurora-forecast-uk with Scotland, northern England, and Wales-specific viewing guidance alongside live KP data.
All 22 location forecast pages now include best months, local tips, viewing spot guides, nearby attractions, FAQ sections, and internal links to related destinations.
Added user-submitted aurora sighting stories to the homepage. Real accounts from travellers who used PolarForecast to plan their trips.
Expanded from 6 to 22 dedicated location pages covering Norway, Iceland, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Alaska, Scotland, and more.
