Single-night trips depend entirely on that one night going well. Three or more nights gives cloud cover a chance to clear and gives more geomagnetic activity a chance to arrive during your stay.
A guided tour trades cost for local knowledge of where skies are clearing right now — genuinely useful in destinations with variable weather. A rental car gives you flexibility to chase clear patches yourself if you're comfortable driving in winter conditions.
Outdoor aurora viewing means standing still in the cold for long stretches. Layering — base, insulating, and a wind/waterproof shell — matters more than any single heavy coat, plus insulated boots and hand warmers.

The live forecast tells you tonight's real conditions and is only meaningful a few days out — geomagnetic activity can't be predicted weeks in advance. This planner instead estimates something that IS predictable that far ahead: how dark it will genuinely be at your destination on your dates, and whether those dates fall inside that destination's typical aurora season.
We use astronomical darkness — the sun at least 6° below the horizon — the same threshold used throughout the site. Civil or nautical twilight can still wash out a faint display, so the darkness-hours figure is intentionally conservative.
