What is the KP Index? A Simple Guide for Aurora Hunters
The KP index is the single most important number for aurora chasers. We explain what it means, how it's measured, and how to use it.
If you've spent any time planning an aurora trip, you've encountered the KP index. It shows up in forecasts, in travel blogs, in hotel booking guidance — 'KP 3 expected tonight' — and yet most travellers don't really understand what it means. Let's fix that.
KP stands for 'Planetarische Kennziffer', a German term meaning planetary index. It was developed in 1932 by German geophysicist Julius Bartels to quantify global geomagnetic disturbance. The scale runs from 0 to 9, where 0 represents perfectly quiet conditions and 9 represents an extreme geomagnetic storm — an event that might happen once or twice per solar cycle.
The number is calculated every three hours. Thirteen geomagnetic observatories around the world, positioned at various latitudes and longitudes, continuously measure horizontal fluctuations in Earth's magnetic field. During each three-hour window, the largest deviation from the expected 'quiet day' baseline is recorded at each station and converted to a local K-index using a quasi-logarithmic scale. The 13 values are then averaged and adjusted to produce the global KP estimate.
What drives the KP to rise? The Sun constantly emits charged particles — the solar wind — but this stream is not uniform. Coronal mass ejections (CMEs) are large clouds of magnetised plasma hurled from the Sun during solar flares. When a CME's magnetic field is oriented southward (a negative Bz value), it reconnects with Earth's magnetic field at the dayside magnetopause, opening a channel for energy to flow in. That energy accelerates particles down the field lines into the polar atmosphere, where they collide with oxygen and nitrogen molecules, producing light — the aurora.
For practical aurora hunting: if you're in Tromsø or Fairbanks, Alaska, KP 1 is often enough to see faint aurora on a clear, dark night. In Iceland, you typically want KP 2 or above. In Scotland, you need a geomagnetic storm — KP 5 or higher — for a reasonable chance. The rule of thumb is that each step up in KP extends the visible aurora zone roughly 2–4 degrees of latitude further south.
